    National Film Society

This issue of the A-Profiler, Nelson Wong interviews Stephen Dypiangco and Patrick Epino, founders of the National Film Society. Find out how Dypiangco and Epino met each other, how the National Film Society became a part of PBS Digital Studios, how they create their videos, and how their vision for Awesome Asian Bad Guys can come to life with your help.

What is the National Film Society and how did it get started?

The National Film Society is a production company we formed in 2011 to start making online video content. We release a new brainy, offbeat and ridiculously good-looking episode every Tuesday on our YouTube channel (http://youtube.com/nationalfilmsociety), which is part of PBS Digital Studios. Since our backgrounds are in filmmaking, we mainly focus on movies, filmmaking and making it in Hollywood.

How did the two of you meet each other?
Although people think we’ve known each other for a long time, we only met two and a half years ago at the 2010 LA Asian Pacific Film Festival. During that first encounter, we realized that we shared a similar interest in new media and using online tools to connect with audiences. ...

    Comedian Joe Wong

This issue of the A-Profiler, Ray Lam interviews comedian Joe Wong.

How would your three year old son describe you?
Silly old man who knows a lot of stuff and is afraid of mom.

Are there other funny people in your family besides yourself?
My parents and my brother are very funny. I was the boring one growing up.

How did your wife and parents react when you told them you wanted to be a comedian?
I never told them, or anybody, I wanted to be a comedian explicitly. I hate telling people things I am not sure of. My parents learned about it from news on the radio in China. My mom couldn’t sleep at night for a while. My dad, a retired engineer, is more relaxed about it and said to the media, “It’s like a black chicken laying white eggs”, a Chinese expression meaning he didn’t expect his progeny to be different from him and successful in something.

My wife, like a lot of my friends and co-workers, couldn’t understand why a Ph.D. would go to bars to tell jokes for drunk people in the beginning. Later she felt that there was something unique about my comedy and she doesn’t want me to give up something I love because of her.

How did you and your wife meet? Do you have a celebrity crushes? ...

    Comedian Joe Nguyen

This issue of the A-Profiler, Nelson Wong interviews comedian Joe Nguyen.

How did you get started in stand-up comedy? Were you considered funny even as a child?
I don't think anyone considered me funny as a child, even when I tried to be. In high school I started getting some laughs among friends and that continued into college, where I realized that I enjoy entertaining people. I also felt like I had more unique jokes than most people. And at one point after watching a stand-up video I thought, "I can do that."

You grew up in Georgia, did that shape any of your comedy today? Has your Vietnamese and Jewish background brought any unique perspectives into your comedy?
Well, I certainly say "y'all" more than your average California comedian. All of that stuff shaped me in some way into who I am, and it also gives me license to make any kind of observational joke about those cultures. So sometimes I'll have jokes about my personal experience as an Asian or a Jew, and other ...
