This issue of the A-Profiler, Nelson Wong interviews filmmaker Shirley Petchprapa. Find out how her latest film project Roxy came about, what it was like working with a dog, and what aspects of filmmaking she enjoyed the most while filming Roxy.

What inspires you to be a director? What is your earliest memory of wanting to become a filmmaker?
Emotions inspire me and the human condition. When I was younger I created narratives for myself to compensate for what I thought I lacked in life. I begged my parents for a hi-8 camera when I was in high school which I shot silly things. I cut between a VCR and the camera - used as a deck (the degradation was awful). I always did visual art stuff. It was a combination of all those things that probably brought me to filmmaking but ...

During my time as a solo performance artist, I became all too familiar with grants. In fact, I found that I spent more time writing grant applications than I did writing material for performance. While I don’t bemoan the process of writing business proposals—I believe all artists should think of themselves as a business entity and get in the habit of concisely promoting their work and themselves—the act of applying for grants is very much like entering a contest. I’d much rather fill out a 3x5 index card and drop it in the mail than manipulate and re-work biographies, summaries, resumes, work samples, project proposals, and goal and artistic statements that will fit into the confines of any given grant competition. They’re all different with almost idiosyncratic advisos about where to put ...

What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed? Last thing you do before you go to bed?
I make the bed! I know, it’s a sickness. Last thing…I brush my teeth.

Do you speak any other languages? Is the use of slang acceptable when writing a children’s book?
I’m conversant but not fluent in both French and Cantonese. And I think slang is acceptable if it serves a purpose: if you’re trying to faithfully capture ...

This issue of the A-Profiler, Raymond Lam interview Life and Dating coach Vanae. Find out how she became a life and dating coach, if she lives by her own advice, and what is the best thing to do on a 3rd date.

Why did you become a life and dating coach?
Honestly because I want others to love themselves before loving others and reach inner fulfillment. Growing up I saw what low self-esteem and confidence did to people so I wanted to empower people for good change. Ultimately, so our children and generations after will be healthier and balanced.

Are there many life and dating coaches who are Asian Pacific Islander? Would you say there are more guys or girls?
Actually, I have yet to meet another API life & dating coach, but I’ve met one male API dating

This issue of the A-Profiler, Nelson Wong interviews Aarti Sequeria, the winner of Food Network's The Next Food Network Star.

What was the road like for you to become a finalist on Food Network's The Next Food Network Star? What has been the most memorable experience since you've become a finalist on The Next Food Network Star?
Well, I started in journalism. I always wanted to be a reporter, and so I started as a production assistant at CNN Chicago straight out of school, and then worked my up to a segment producer at CNN Financial News in New York. I really loved it, loved feeling like we were in the centre of what was happening in the world. Once I got married, I moved to LA to join my college love, Brendan, who was here pursuing his acting career. I started to ...
